ABOUT WILD GAME RECOVERY TRUST

Turning a national challenge into a community solution

Hunters are already out there doing what they love. We back them by supporting their vital role in managing wild animal numbers — helping to protect ecosystems and regenerate the environment.

At the same time, we support hunters to get quality game meat into food banks, tackling food insecurity by making sure good food doesn’t go to waste and reaches those who need it most.

Our Vision

A thriving Aotearoa where wild animals are well managed and hunters help feed communities.

Our Purpose

To support hunters to turn wild game into food - helping feed communities and reduce waste, while also contributing to the management of wild animal populations across Aotearoa.

PURPOSE BEHIND THE HUNT

CONSERVATION

Wild animals can harm native plants and species, and in some areas, they disrupt how ecosystems function. Managing their numbers is essential to protect our environment.

FOOD SECURITY

Nearly one in five children in New Zealand live in food-insecure households. We connect hunters with food banks to ensure nutritious game meat is processed and given to those who need it.

CONNECTION

We build meaningful connections, between people, communities, and the land, sharing skills, knowledge, and the food that sustains us to foster purpose, stewardship, and wellbeing.

FOOD BANKS FEED FAMILIES

We work with hunting groups seeking to scale up their efforts, supporting those managing wild animal numbers and turning wild game into quality protein for food banks and communities.

We support hunters to go out and manage wild animal numbers. For hunting groups able to take it one step further, we provide resources to help harvest wild game for food banks, such as connections to food banks, logistical assistance, access to chillers, butchers, and other essential support.

Wild game is processed by hunters and butchers, and distributed to local food banks.

Food banks take donated meat products (mince, sausages, and
patties) and distribute it to people in need of food support.
